Which agitator technology suits which application?

Depending on the mixing task and viscosity, different types of agitators are used. Mixing tasks include homogenising, suspending, dispersing or emulsifying, with viscosities ranging from 1–600 millipascals (aqueous) to over 100,000 mPas. Behälter KG offers a wide range of agitators for virtually all industrial applications:

Stainless steel propeller agitator for mixing aqueous substances in a mixing vessel

Propeller agitator

Propeller agitators are well suited for simple mixing of aqueous substances, either as a directly driven high-speed mixer (e.g. for fruit juice or spirits) or as a geared agitator with lower speed for gentler mixing (e.g. dairy products).

Anchor agitator as a slow-running geared agitator for viscous media in a stainless steel vessel

Anchor agitator

A slow-running, space-filling geared agitator for more viscous substances, e.g. as a cream ripener or for media such as chocolate, toothpaste or polymer solutions. The anchor agitator is operated at low speeds of 5–10 revolutions per minute.

Bar agitator as a slow-running geared agitator for homogenising media in a stainless steel vessel

Bar agitator

A slow-running geared agitator with bar-shaped impeller blades, for the gentle homogenisation of low- to medium-viscosity media, such as mayonnaise, paints, shampoo or pudding.

Pitched blade agitator with 4-blade impeller at 45-degree angle for homogenisation in a stainless steel vessel

Pitched blade agitator

E.g. a 4-blade impeller at a 45° angle, which is suitable for homogenising, dispersing, suspending and degassing at comparatively high power input. The pitched blade agitator is adapted in blade angle and geometry to suit the mixing task.

Dissolver as a toothed disc agitator for dispersing and emulsifying in a stainless steel vessel

Dissolver

Also known as a toothed disc agitator, the dissolver generates high shear forces and is suitable for dispersing, emulsifying or wet grinding (e.g. printing inks, pigment pastes or plasters).

Cup agitator as a slow-running cone-shaped impeller for homogenising in a stainless steel vessel

Cup agitator

Slow-running, cone-shaped cup impellers are particularly suitable for the gentle homogenisation and degassing of aqueous to viscous substances, without shear forces (e.g. soap, oils, lotions, shampoo).

Jet mixer as a high-speed rotor-stator agitator in a stainless steel vessel

Jet mixer

A high-speed rotor-stator agitator, in which homogeneous mixing is achieved through targeted flow guidance, without causing unwanted air entrainment or sedimentation.

Magnetic agitator installed in the bottom of a stainless steel vessel for aseptic mixing processes

Magnetic agitator

Installed in the bottom of the vessel, designed for aseptic applications and small mixing volumes (e.g. eye drops, active ingredients, laboratory trials). Even the smallest batches can be agitated with a magnetic agitator.

Buying criteria for agitated vessels

The agitator is the central element of the agitated vessel and should be matched as precisely as possible to the respective mixing task and the viscosity of the medium. Depending on the application, propeller, pitched blade, anchor, bar or dissolver agitators are used – from high-speed to slow and gentle.

If explosive media such as solvents or alcohol-based products are processed, an explosion-proof (ATEX-compliant) agitator is required. The design is based on the medium, environment and zone classification.

The required volume of the agitated vessel is determined by batch size, process sequence and available installation space. In addition to the usable volume, the vessel design also plays an important role in the mixing result and integration into existing systems.

Agitated vessels are available in vertical or horizontal configurations and can be equipped with feet, saddles, castors or forklift runners as required. The design affects mixing performance as well as cleanability and handling.

Many mixing processes require controlled temperature management or operation under overpressure or vacuum. In these cases, temperature-controlled agitated vessels are used. An overview of various temperature control options can be found in this technical article.

Depending on the process, agitated vessels can be designed for elevated overpressure or vacuum operation. These requirements must be defined early on, as they significantly influence design, material selection and safety.

Frequently asked questions about mixing vessels

The right agitator depends on the mixing task and the viscosity of the medium.

For aqueous media, high-speed propeller or pitched blade agitators are commonly used. For viscous products, anchor agitators, bar agitators or dissolvers are used depending on the mixing task. In addition, the vessel geometry, fill level and further process specifications influence the selection. For a much more detailed overview of the various agitators and application areas, take a look at our technical article on this topic.

Used mixing vessels are immediately available, significantly more affordable and field-proven.

Used agitated vessels come from running or recently decommissioned production lines and the agitator technology is therefore optimally matched to the respective vessel. High-quality features such as ATEX agitators, heating jackets or higher-alloyed materials ( 1.4571, 1.4404 or 1.4539) are often installed. They also make a measurable contribution to sustainability. More information about the advantages of used vessels can be found in our technical article on this topic.

An explosion-proof mixing vessel with agitator (ATEX) is required when explosive media are being processed.

This includes alcohol-based, solvent-based or flammable products, among others. In these cases, the agitator in particular must be designed to be ATEX-compliant. The necessity arises from the medium, the environment and the zone classification. For a much more detailed overview of the relevant regulations and practical examples, take a look at our technical article on this topic.

Yes, used agitated vessels can in many cases be technically adapted or retrofitted.

Options include, among others, replacement or structural modification of the agitator, retrofitting of nozzles or flanges, or shortening of the vessel legs. The preparation of additional technical documentation, such as a verifiable structural analysis, is also possible. Contact us to discuss your specific modification requirements.

Brand-new mixing vessels are manufactured entirely to customer-specific requirements.

Options include vertical or horizontal agitated vessels, temperature-controlled configurations as well as pressure- or vacuum-rated process vessels. Material, volume, geometry and agitator technology are precisely tailored to the respective application. Special designs are also feasible. Take a look at our latest agitated vessel reference projects here. Via this link you can submit your specific vessel construction enquiry.

Mixing vessels for various fields of application

In the food industry, mixing vessels are used for homogenising, suspending and temperature control of liquid and pasty media, e.g. for dairy products, beverages, sauces or confectionery. A hygienic design with ground weld seams, dead-space-free construction and suitable agitator technology is essential here. The option of CIP cleaning is also often of high relevance.

Depending on the product, propeller, pitched blade or anchor agitators are used, partly in temperature-controlled configurations. Behälter KG offers a large selection of immediately available, food-grade stainless steel agitated vessels in various volumes and configurations.

Quality in focus: Our standards for used agitated vessels

At Behälter KG, the quality and functional reliability of used stainless steel mixing tanks with agitators and mixing vessels is our top priority. The quality inspection begins before the purchase: We carefully examine which production environment the mixing vessel comes from, what it was last used for and what condition the vessel and agitator are in. Most used agitated vessels come from running or recently decommissioned productions of reputable companies and were reliably operated until shortly before dismantling.
