How is a pressure vessel defined, according to the Pressure Equipment Directive?

According to Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), a vessel is considered to be a pressure vessel if it is designed for an operating pressure of more than 0.5 bar. This applies to pressure vessels, steam boilers, piping, pressure-resistant equipment, as well as the assembly of pressure equipment to assembly groups.

Vessels under 0.5 bar operating pressure are not subject to this regulation. Vessels that are operated exclusively with negative pressure (vacuum) are also not subject to the pressure equipment directive and only fall within the good engineering practice. Nevertheless, we still include vacuum vessels in the category of pressure vessels as the majority of vacuum-proof vessels is also designed for overpressure (e.g. -1/+6 Bar).

If available, technical documentation such as TÜV reports, technical drawings and material certificates will be supplied with the used equipment – if such documents are available, they will be mentioned in the data sheet of the respective used pressure vessel. If the documents are not available but are necessary for you, please contact us before purchasing the pressure vessel. We will be happy to advise you on a a potential recertification test by the TÜV or a free or charge charge material composition analysis that we can offer you though our X-ray spectrometer.
