Application areas for flat-bottom tanks & flat-bottom vessels

A stainless steel flat-bottom tank is widely used in the food industry as a non-pressurized storage tank for liquid raw materials and intermediate products. In particular for media such as fresh milk, mineral water or fruit juice. The vertical, cylindrical design with flat bottom enables hygienic integration into production plants while at the same time providing large volumes typically of 50 – 150 cbm.

Flat-bottom vessels are often installed outdoors, which is why a fully welded insulation jacket is a classic feature of food-grade stainless steel flat-bottom tanks. This protects the storage medium from external weather conditions. Flat-bottom tanks are also often equipped with a side-entry agitator to keep the storage medium homogeneously suspended and prevent sedimentation.

Your advantages with used flat-bottom vessels and tanks from Behälter KG

We offer used flat-bottom tanks from stock and can make them available without long manufacturing or procurement lead times.

Verified technical execution

With a used flat-bottom vessel, you acquire a proven product that can be put back into operation again at short notice.

Sustainable use

Reusing a used flat-bottom tank actively contributes to the circular economy and conserves valuable resources.

Reduced investment costs

Used flat-bottom tanks can be purchased for a fraction of the investment cost of a new tank.

Factory-new stainless steel flat-bottom tanks – custom-built tank fabrication

Stainless steel flat-bottom tank for industrial liquid storage in custom tank fabrication

In our tank and vessel fabrication department, we manufacture customer-specific flat-bottom tanks made of stainless steel for the non-pressurized storage of industrial liquids. Our production spectrum includes cylindrical stainless steel vessels with flat bottom with a diameter of up to 4.0 meters. A large proportion of the tanks are already fitted with fully welded insulation ex works and equipped with a side-entry propeller agitator. The exact dimensions, the material and other technical parameters are precisely matched to the customer-specific requirements.

Flat-bottom vessels, especially for outdoor installation, are designed in accordance with the site-specific seismic zone, wind and snow loads. A verifiable structural report then ensures that the vessel can be installed and commissioned for the intended purpose. See the quality of our factory-new reference projects, which we have produced for our customers in recent years.

Quality in focus: Our standards for used stainless steel flat-bottom tanks

At Behälter KG, the quality and functional safety of used flat-bottom tanks play a central role. The quality inspection begins even before purchase: We carefully check the production environment the flat-bottom tank comes from, for what purpose it was used and the condition of the tank shell, tank bottom and accessories. Most used flat-bottom tanks come from operating or recently decommissioned beverage and food plants of well-known companies and were reliably operated until dismantling.

Frequently asked questions about stainless steel flat-bottom vessels and tanks

A flat-bottom tank is a cylindrical storage tank, upright on a flat bottom. For optimized emptying of the tanks, the flat bottom is often provided with a slight slope towards the outlet. Flat-bottom vessels are suitable for non-pressurized storage of liquid substances and are widely used in the food industry as raw material storage tanks.

Flat-bottom vessels are suitable for storing milk, water, fruit juice, oils, or also for buffering hot water or wastewater. The specific suitability depends on the material, the surface finish and the process conditions.

A flat-bottom tank consists of a cylindrical shell and a flat bottom that rests directly on a foundation or a supporting structure. The tanks are designed for vertical installation and have defined nozzles, manways and draining devices. This design enables large storage volumes and stable integration into industrial tank systems.

Flat-bottom tanks are generally designed for non-pressurized operation under atmospheric conditions. They serve as storage tanks for liquids and are not intended for overpressure applications. For pressurized processes, special pressure vessels with dished heads are used.

Stainless steel flat-bottom tanks are manufactured in a wide volume range – primarily, however, for volumes of 10,000 liters or more. Towards the upper end, the volume is only limited by the transportability of the vessel, which is no longer possible at around 250,000 liters. In the dairy industry, flat-bottom tanks with 50,000 liters, 100,000 liters or 150,000 liters are the most common sizes.

Installation is carried out in a vertical position on a suitable concrete foundation or a load-bearing base slab. The flat bottom allows direct load transfer to the installation surface.

Flat-bottom vessels offer large storage volumes with a proven and cost-effective design compared to other upright designs. Due to the large contact area on the concrete foundation, the loads from the weight are also optimally distributed, which offers structural advantages.

Flat-bottom tanks are primarily used in the dairy industry and beverage industry. In individual cases, however, they can also be found in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry. They are primarily used as storage tanks, buffer vessels or feed vessels.
