An IBC container — also called an IBC tank or IBC vessel — is a standardised transport vessel for liquids and free-flowing materials. Intermediate bulk containers (IBC) are used worldwide for the transport, storage and stacking of industrial goods. Most models are made of plastic (HDPE). They cover simple applications such as water or garden irrigation. For industrial processes, stainless steel IBC containers are the professional choice. They last significantly longer and are chemically resistant.

What Types of IBC Containers Are Available?

Cylindrical IBC containers (round containers) are characterised by their easy cleaning and are therefore particularly common in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The round design prevents dead zones where product residues could accumulate. Steam-sterilisable aseptic IBC containers (also known as Zentis containers) also belong to this product group and are widely used for the transport of fruit concentrates and food additives.

Typical volumes range between 500 and 1000 litres. The vessel is usually made of stainless steel 304 (1.4301) or higher-alloyed stainless steel 316. The transport frame is typically made of galvanised steel, or stainless steel for particularly sterile requirements.

Particularly with rarer designs such as bulk material containers with explosion-proof outlet valves, insulated stainless steel containers or IBC containers in stainless steel 316 with ADR approval, a used container is especially worthwhile.

Our used IBC containers come from a wide range of industries: often used in food production for liquid egg, sauces and fruit puree, they can equally be used in pharmaceutical operations or in the chemical industry for the transport of paints, coatings or solvents.

Behälter KG has offered a broad range of brand-new stainless steel IBC containers for almost 60 years, manufactured in series production but customisable to meet specific requirements. The following product categories are available:

  • PLO Container: IBC container with UN approval (500–1500 L)

All brand-new IBC containers are also available heatable / coolable, insulated or with matching agitator technology. The quality inspection begins before purchase: We carefully assess the production environment the IBC container originated from, its most recent application and the condition of both the vessel and the transport frame.

Frequently Asked Questions About IBC Containers

An IBC container (Intermediate Bulk Container) is a standardised large packaging for the transport and storage of liquids and free-flowing materials. IBC containers are available in plastic (HDPE) and stainless steel.

Unlike a conventional stainless steel vessel, an IBC container additionally meets the testing requirements for the transport of dangerous goods by road (UN dangerous goods approval or ADR approval). The most common IBC tanks hold between 500 and 1,000 litres.

A conventional stainless steel vessel is a general umbrella term for vessels made of stainless steel — from the storage vessel to the pressure vessel to the mixing tank. Stainless steel IBC containers are used in demanding industries where hygiene, chemical resistance and durability are critical:

Food industry: Transport of liquid egg, sauces, fruit concentrates and dairy products. Pharmaceuticals: Storage and transport of pharmaceutical active ingredients and powders. Chemical industry: Transport of paints & coatings, adhesives and solvents.

Stainless steel IBC containers are suitable for all industries where conventional plastic IBCs reach their limits:

Food & Beverages: Raw materials such as liquid egg, sauces, fruit juices, dairy products. Pharma & Cosmetics: Active ingredients, creams, lotions. Chemicals: Paints, coatings, solvents, adhesives. Recycling & Environmental Technology: Wastewater, bioethanol.

If you wish to transport flammable, corrosive or environmentally hazardous substances on public roads, you require an IBC container with a valid UN dangerous goods approval (ADR test certificate).

This applies to, among others, alcohols, fuels, paints, coatings and solvents. For purely internal transport (on-site traffic), an ADR approval is generally not required. We are happy to assess together with you whether your application requires UN approval. Contact us via our contact form.

Prices for used stainless steel IBC containers vary depending on size, material grade, equipment and condition. Used stainless steel IBCs are typically significantly more affordable than new manufacturing and, with professional inspection, offer equivalent functional reliability.

Since stainless steel IBC containers are in daily mobile use, minor cosmetic imperfections are unavoidable. The difference to a brand-new container is no longer visually noticeable after a short period of operation. Yes, when storing water-polluting substances (WHG-relevant media), a spill containment tray is legally required. The containment tray must be able to hold at least the volume of the largest stored vessel.

The exact requirements depend on the water hazard class (WGK) of the stored medium and the applicable regional regulations. In case of uncertainty, we recommend consulting your environmental officer or the responsible authority.
